President Lula, do not allow Brazil to sell oil to Israel
Crude oil was the leading item in Brazil's trade with Israel in 2024; OC calls on President Lula to order the immediate suspension of the exports
The Brazilian government rightly responded to the illegal interception by the Israeli Navy of the vessel Madleen, which was carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. However, Lula can and must do more. In addition to diplomatic efforts to protect the 12 detained activists and to end the genocide and siege of Gaza, we call on President Lula to order the immediate suspension of oil exports to Israel.
Lula has already condemned the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, but the oil exported by Brazil and other countries continues to fuel Benjamin Netanyahu’s war machine. In August 2024, an analysis by the organization Oil Change International showed that Brazil was one of the top five suppliers of crude oil to Israel. The same oil that pollutes the planet is also contributing to the massacre of the Palestinian people.
Crude oil was the leading item in Brazil’s trade with Israel in 2024. According to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, it accounted for 30% of all Brazilian exports to Israel that year, totaling US$216 million. The second most exported product to Israel in 2024 was beef (23% of the total), worth US$165 million.
There is no climate justice without the protection of human rights. An international community incapable of stopping an ethnic cleansing unfolding in real time before the eyes of the world will likewise be unable to address the climate crisis.
